NILES — A short-handed Niles boys track team split a pair of SMAC dual meets against Battle Creek Central and host Mattawan on Tuesday.

Jordon Brown won three events and Adam Shepherd two events as the Vikings defeated the Bearcats 111-48.

Brown and Shepherd also finished second and third in another event as they wound up on the wrong end of a 98-45 loss to Mattawan.

“It was a pretty successful meet,” said Niles coach Tony Todd. “Pretty much with our injuries and people out, I have two of my top three sprinters out and my top long jumper is out, I pretty much just put anybody in the relays, so we gave up about 20 points there. That is probably why Mattawan got us.”

Despite the lack of some of its top performers, Todd was more than happy with the efforts of the remaining runners and throwers, as well as some of the younger competitors who stepped up and performed well.

Brown got to compete in some events he would not normally, and he ended up having a big night. He won the 100 and 200 meters, won the long jump and was second in the 400 meters.

“I put Jordon in a bunch of individual events,” Todd said. “He has always wanted to long jump. I was not scared that he was going to hurt himself because he is pretty durable, but I told him, ‘when you do a warm up for long jump with four of five run-throughs to get your steps and four jumps, that is going to take a little bit out of you for, guess what? The quarter. It will not hurt you in the 100 of 200, but that quarter is going to hurt a bit.”

Brown won the 100 with a time of 11.52 and the 200 with a time of 22.78. In the 400 meters, he was clocked at 50.50. In winning the long jump, he had a leap of 19-7.5.

Shepherd was equally as impressive in winning the 800 with a time of 2:07.66 and the 1,600 with a time of 4:55.13.

He finished third in the 3,200 meters with a time of 11:30.0.

“Adam is the bulk of my distance and he had an excellent meet,” Todd said of his junior.

Todd was impressed with freshman James Pegan, who finished fifth (1:39.00) in the 3,200 meters and helped the Vikings to a runner-up finish in the 3,200-meter relay, which posted a time of 10:23.0. Also on the squad was Huck Coffee, Nick Alkire and Ashton Burrous.

“He is a freshman, but he is really coming on pretty good,” Todd said. “I am pretty happy with him and his performance. I looking forward to seeing what he can do. He has a lot of potential.”

On the girls’ side, Niles was swept by Battle Creek Central (80-61) and host Mattawan (113-48).

Morgan Warren led the Vikings to a domination of the field events.

She won the shot put with a throw of 35-feet and the discus with a toss of 85-5.

Marika Ruppart won the high jump with a height of 4-8, while Sophia Hover won the pole vault with a height of 8-feet.

Brandywine track

Host Brandywine was swept by Parchment, while Buchanan was swept by Bridgman in the BCS Athletic Conference double dual meet Wednesday afternoon.

The Panthers defeated the Brandywine boys team 119-18, while they beat the girls team 115-21.

The Buchanan boys fell to Bridgman 69-66, while the Bees defeated the Bucks girls team 77-59.

Bryce McLane won the 1,600 meters for the Bobcats with a time of 4:53.89, while Buchanan’s Walker Barz won the 3,200 meters with a time of 10:46.0.

Buchanan’s Garret Lollar won the pole vault with a height of 9 feet.

In the girls meet, Brandywine’s Kaitlyn VanLaecke won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.82.

The Bucks’ 800-meter relay team took first place with a time of 1:58.57.

The team consisted of Jenna French, Shailin Golden, Claire Lietz and Jade Smith.
