SOUTHWEST MICHIGAN — State Rep. Brad Paquette, of Berrien Springs, was appointed by Speaker of the House Lee Chatfield to serve on the MiSTEM Advisory Council for the term ending Dec. 31, 2020.

The MiSTEM Advisory Council is tasked with providing the governor, legislature, and Michigan Department of Talent and Economic Development with recommendations designed to improve and promote innovation in STEM education and to prepare students for careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The council also makes specific funding recommendations for approved programs that best deliver STEM education – related opportunities to pupils.

“I’m truly blessed to have received this appointment,” Paquette said. “Students deserve greater access to career and technical education options that lead to potential career opportunities. As a member of this council, I will have the opportunity to use my background as a teacher and find innovative ways to change our statewide STEM education strategy for the better.”

Prior to taking office, Paquette taught at the project-based learning New Tech Academy at Niles High School where they used hands-on learning and blended subject areas. He hopes to tap into fellow STEM educators for their ideas and suggestions.

“If you are a STEM educator, I want to hear how we can provide you with more resources and flexibility in the classroom,” Paquette said. “If you are a STEM employer, I’m interested to hear your thoughts on how we can better tie STEM education to real world opportunities, further improving our student’s ability to transition successfully into a 21st Century workforce.”
