NILES — Heading into today’s BCS Red Division doubleheader with Bridgman, the Brandywine baseball team has fashioned a 7-1 overall record.
That record includes a sweep of Lake Michigan Catholic in a BCS non-divisional doubleheader Monday night.
The Bobcats defeated the Lakers 16-1 and 14-4.
“These non-conference games are good because I get a look at our other pitchers and players,” said veteran Brandywine coach David Sidenbender. “Jacob Wolfinger, Jacob Fox and John Johnson showed a lot on the mound today. Shane Brown, Jalen Briggs and Jordan Abrams really did a nice job on the bases and at the plate as well. They are getting more and more acclimated to baseball.”
But despite the early season success, Sidenbender knows his team still have a ways to go.
“We still need to work on keeping up our intensity and continue to have quality at bats throughout an entire doubleheader,” he said.
In the opener, Wolfinger tossed a two-hitter.
Brandywine banged out 12 hits, including a triple by Derrick Miller and a pair of doubles by James Vaughn. Also finishing with doubles were Jaelen Briggs, Kevin Conrad and Connor Janowiak.
In the nightcap, Jacob Fox worked the first two innings to earn the victory. Miller, Wolfinger and John Johnson also took the mound for the Bobcats.
Brandywine had eight more hits, led by Gabe Gouin, who doubled and tripled. Cam Barrier also had a double.
Today’s game starts at 4:15 p.m.
