NILES — Among sparkling displays of jewelry and a sea of dresses every color of the rainbow, crews worked Wednesday morning to put the finishing touches inside the new Niles business, Oh My bridal shop.

The new business will open its doors at 10 a.m. April 15 at 307 E. Main St. — the former location of Sentiments dress shop. A grand opening to celebrate the new business will take place on May 1.

Business owner Mica Yonker said she looks forward to bringing affordable prices and variety to her customers.

Oh My LLC is a family-run business that specializes in an assortment of formal attire, from prom and pageants to bridal events. Some of the merchandise is new retail and some consignment, seeking to offer customer’s bargain rates. Customers can also find shoes, purses and jewelry. Yonker’s family members, who volunteer to help run the shop, also help her with flower arrangements, custom alterations and wedding planning services. A website is currently in the works to offer customers the chance to buy products via the internet.

Yonker grew up in Niles but currently lives in Edwardsburg. She is the former business owner of the Second Hand Rose in Edwardsburg. A “laundry list of issues” with the building forced the business to shut its doors in March and seek a new location.

While passing through downtown Niles, Yonker was drawn to the big display windows on the recently closed Sentiments dress shop.

“I drove by Marie’s shop (the owner of Sentiments) a thousand times and [world] go, ‘what I would give for those windows,’” Yonker said. “With this available, I was snatching it up as fast as I can. Just the sheer size [of them]. In Edwardsburg, we had tiny windows.”

Those display windows now feature a whole lot of lace and a “Coming Soon” sign, enticing many a curious customer.

“It’s already blown up here,” Yonker said. “I’ve had people knocking on the door already, ‘can we come in?’”

Yonker got started in the formal attire industry 10 years ago when her mother-in-law Kaye Wells made plans to open Second Hand Rose. However, before she opened the store, a job opportunity encouraged Wells to move out state.

“She had signed a lease and everything. I was a stay-at-home mom and was like, ‘I will do it,’” Yonker said. “The next thing I know, I was buying her out, and it was a full-time job.”

Yonker said seeing customers find the perfect dress and experience that “Oh My” moment is the best part of her job. In addition, Yonker likes using her business to give back to the community.

Almost every prom season, Yonker has offered gift cards and tuxedo giveaways to high schoolers, helping them to be able to obtain attire for the occasion. This year, she was moving her business during the majority of prom season and was not able to do a giveaway. Next year, though, Yonkers plans to be back on track and resume giveaways.

On the wedding planning side, she said she loves helping residents to design a customized wedding. She’s helped with some unique ones, including a fishing-themed wedding and Tim Burton-themed wedding.

Yonker still has some final details to hammer out, including what the business’ hours of operation will be. She advised customers to keep an eye on the Oh My Facebook page for updates.

As she looks to the future, Yonker said she most looks forward to opening her business’ doors.
