Berrien County parks offer variety of spring activities

BERRIEN COUNTY — As the weather warms, Berrien County Parks will offer residents multiple outdoor activities. The following illustrates what’s available at local parks.

Niles Township

The Madeline Bertrand Disc Golf course features 18 holes and is open during regular park hours. Disc golf fees: daily disc golf pass: adult $4, youth (15 and under) $3.

For an annual Disc Golf Permit costs are: adult $30, youth $20. Daily Disc Rental: adult $1, youth $.50.A 34th Annual Spring Disc Golf Derby will take place Saturday, April 27. Watervliet

Paw Paw River County Park is now open. This county park was made possible by a grant from the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund and includes a barrier-free kayak/canoe launch, a pedestrian bridge providing access to an island in the Paw Paw River, a hard surface walking trail loop on the island, as well as overlook/fishing decks and viewing areas along the Paw Paw River. People are welcome to grab their binoculars, fishing pole or kayak and check it out. The park is located on M-140 in Watervliet next to Hayes Park.

Berrien Center

People can see the spring flowers during the Spring Woodland Wildflower Watcher’s Walks on at Love Creek. The same wooded trails that provide skiing in winter are also known for displays of spring wildflowers. People are welcome to join a park naturalist on one or more of the following days for a guided walk.

Hikes will take place at 3 p.m. Saturdays, April 20, April 27, May 4 and May 11. The hikes will start at the Love Creek Nature Center.

For youth, the traditional Frog Pond Journey will take place starting at 3 p.m. April 13 at Love Creek. The hike will include a chance for young explorers to head to a pond and search for amphibians and aquatic creatures. Those who participate will get their feet wet. Nets and other equipment will be supplied.

Woodcock Watch and Owl Prowl

Bird watchers will meet at the nature center for this Woodcock Watch and Owl Prowl at 8 p.m. April 13. Those who attend could catch the American Woodcock performing its comical evening courtship display. To wrap things up, participants will try to find a Barred Owl.  Those interested are advised to bring warm, dark-colored clothing and a small flashlight for the walk back.

Other birding opportunities

Berrien County is one of Michigan’s most popular birding locations and Love Creek sponsors the Berrien Birding Club. The club offers a regular schedule of group outings open to all level of birders. For more information, visit berriencounty.org/434/Birding.

Galien River County Park

The Galien River County Park in New Buffalo Township features a 300-foot canopy walkway through the treetops leading to a 60-foot high Marsh Overlook Tower. The tower provides a view of the Galien River and marsh. Down below, another walkway leads from the edge of the forest to the river deck on the banks of the Galien.
