Huston single gives Chieftains opening win

DOWAGIAC — The Dowagiac baseball team split with visiting Coloma in its season opener at Rotary Park Tuesday afternoon.

The Chieftains rallied for a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to edge the Comets 4-3.

Coloma rebounded to edge Dowagiac 6-5 in the second game, which was stopped after two and a half innings due to darkness.

In the opening game, Coloma scored single runs in the first, third and top-half of the seventh inning to take a 3-2 lead on the Chieftains, who scored single runs in the fourth and sixth innings.

With one out in the bottom of the seventh, back-to-back Coloma walks to Hunter Brackensick and Cody Dorman got the Dowagiac rally started.

With two outs, an error by the Coloma shortstop on a sharply hit ball by Luke Staten allowed Brackensick to score the tying run.

A walk-off single to right field by Tyler Huston scored Dorman with the winning run.

Dowagiac outhit the Comets 6-3 in the opening game.

The Chieftains were led by Huston, who was 2-for-3, while Dorman doubled.

A.J. Kidd went the distance to pick up the victory. He tossed a three-hitter with 11 strikeouts.

Nick Eastman took the loss in relief for Coloma.

A two-run third inning allowed the Comets to earn the split with the Chieftains.

Coloma scored four runs in the first, while Dowagiac scored two in the bottom of the first and three more in the second to take a 5-4 lead on the Comets.

Andrew McIntosh had the lone hit for Dowagiac against winning pitcher Ethan Vandermolen.

Dashawn Brooks allowed just two hits and no earned runs as the Chieftains committed four errors in the nightcap.

Dowagiac returns to action April 10 when they travel to Marcellus.
