Benton Harbor woman killed in fatal pedestrian crash

BUCHANAN TOWNSHIP —A 36-year-old Benton Harbor woman was pronounced dead Wednesday night after she was struck by a vehicle in Buchanan Township, according to Michigan State Police.

The fatal crash occurred at 9:06 p.m. on Red Bud Trail near Howe Lane. An initial investigation showed that a farm truck traveling north on Red Bud Trail struck the female pedestrian as she was attempting to cross the roadway from the east.

The crash remains under investigation, and alcohol appears to be a factor in the crash, police said.

The name of the woman is being withheld, pending notification to next of kin.

The name of the truck driver, a 65-year-old Buchanan man, was also not released. He was lodged at the Berrien County jail on the charge of operating while intoxicated causing death.

The Michigan State Police was assisted at the scene by the Buchanan Police Department and SMCAS ambulance.
