Jamison a state runner-up, Elmore finishes fifth

DETROIT — Niles’ Jamison Zimmerman came up just short of winning a Division 2 individual state wrestling championship at Ford Field in Detroit on Saturday.

Zimmerman (39-7) lost a 9-2 decision to St. John’s Jacob Brya in the 103-pound championship match.

Zimmerman reached the championship match by defeating Musa Yahia of Melvindale 12-11 in the opening round. He knocked off Jack Parker of Spring Lake 8-6 in the quarterfinals before defeating Kyle Ferrier of Marysville 7-3 in the semifinals.

Niles’ Brian Soto and Robert Buckland were seventh and eighth place finishers at 285 and 152 respectively.

Soto pinned Tyler Whiteside of Dearborn Divine Child in 1:29 in his final match to finish the year at 33-7.

Buckland lost to Quenten Hall of DeWitt 6-1 to finish his year at 37-14.

In Division 3, Dowagiac’s Dylan Elmore and Wyatt Bailey placed fifth and eight respectively at 119 and 285 pounds.

Elmore (50-7) defeated Hunter Norris of Millington in the fifth-place match, 8-1.

Bailey (37-14) was pinned by Joe Harper of Imlay City in his final match.

Division 4 also produced a pair of state placers in Brandywine’s Hunter Heath and Cassopolis Dylan Green.

Heath was fifth at 130-pound as he won by injury default over George Ames of Clinton. Heath finishes the year at 51-4.

Green also finished fifth as he defeated Josh Pasco of Brown City 6-2 at 171 pounds. Green ends his season with a 40-7 record.
