STURGIS — With sole possession of second place in the Wolverine Conference South Division on the line, host Sturgis used a big fourth quarter to pull out a 51-33 victory over Edwardsburg in a make-up contest Monday night.
Sturgis started out hot in the opening quarter, hitting its first four shots and going 6-of-8 overall.
Edwardsburg only got off four shots, hitting two of them — a 3-pointer from Mac Gaideski and a Chase Sager layup.
Edwardsburg committed six turnovers in the quarter, which hindered their offensive production.
In the second quarter the Eddies did a better job of taking care of the basketball and were able to light up the scoreboard a little more.
Zach Strycker led the team down in the block with six points, but the Eddies could only manage a stalemate with the Trojans, which left them on the wrong end of a 25-16 halftime score.
Even though the Edwardsburg offense was shooting 50 percent, it only got off 12 total shots. Contrary to that, Sturgis made 11 out of 18 for the half.
The start of the second half was a mirror image of the second quarter with both teams scoring 12 points and both shooting better than 50 percent.
Stryker again was productive in the post with six points.
With the defensive pressure beginning to increase, so did the amount of fouls, which would be a big factor for the Eddies in the final quarter.
In the final eight minutes, the Trojans pulled away from Edwardsburg, mostly at the free throw line as they scored 11 of their 14 points from the charity stripe.
The Edwardsburg offense went cold as the Eddies made just one of eight attempts, that being a 3-pointer by Colby Sidenbender.
Stryker led the Eddies with 12 points, while Sidenbender finished with six, Luke Hudak with five, Trey Harvey with four and Chase Sager and Mac Gaideski each with three.
Tom Kurowski of Sturgis led all scorers with 21 points.
The Eddies are now 6-9. Their non-conference game with Niles scheduled for Tuesday night was postponed due to inclement weather.
