Man dies from injuries following car versus pedestrian crash Saturday

NILES — A 70-year-old man died after succumbing to injuries in a car versus pedestrian crash Saturday evening at an intersection near the Cass-Berrien County line, according to the Michigan State Police.
At approximately 6:40 p.m., police and first responders were dispatched to the crash in front of the Marathon gas station at the intersection of U.S. 12 Highway and Reum Road.
The victim, identified as Earl Edward Doss, of Niles, succumbed to his injuries on scene. Troopers from the Michigan State Police office arrived on scene and rendered first aid until a SMCAS ambulance arrived.
The driver of the vehicle, a 35-year-old Niles resident, stayed on scene and assisted with the investigation. Michigan State Police said the initial investigation appears as though Doss was crossing the street when he was struck by the vehicle. The crash remains open pending further investigation, police said.
Troopers were assisted by the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, Pokagon Band Tribal Police, Niles Township Fire Department, SMCAS ambulance service, MDOT and the Cass County MEI’s office.
