NOVAK: Mother Nature always knows

It always amazes me how we can go through most of the winter sports season with very little trouble, that is until it is time for the postseason to begin.

How does Mother Nature know exactly when to start dumping snow and sub-zero temperatures into our area just when the biggest games of the year are on tap?

League and division championships are to be decided over the next couple of weeks in wrestling, as well as boys and girls basketball.

On Saturday, wrestlers begin their post season with conference tournaments before they switch gears and start the postseason with the team and individual districts the following Wednesday and Saturday.

Somewhere in the back of my mind I knew we would have to pay for all the nice weather we had in December and the first half of January.

I had even talked to a few of the spring sports coaches and we agreed that the nice weather would cause them issues when March and April rolled around.

I also know that year after year the weather seems to turn ugly just when there is no place left to move postponed games.

There is also very little wiggle room when it comes to moving around postseason tournament games.

That is especially true about wrestling when you have weigh-ins to deal with.

I feel bad for the athletic directors in Indiana, who are currently trying to reschedule sectional games that are being postponed over the next couple of days as the wind chill indexes drop into dangerous territory.

Hopefully this will pass and by Saturday, we will start to rebound and have a stretch of normal winter weather that will keep all of our remaining regular season and postseason games on track.

Make sure you check out our social media pages (Facebook and Twitter) as I attempt to keep everyone up to speed on cancellations, postponements and rescheduled contests.

As soon as I get the information and I am close to a computer, I will get them online so the fans have some idea of what is going on.

We are in the sprint to the final for winter sports teams. There are numerous big games left on the schedule. With the help of Mother Nature, let’s get out there and support the local teams as they strive for conference and state tournament championships.
