Athlete Showcase: Dowagiac’s Celina Koetter

Celina Koetter is a sophomore on the Dowagiac girls basketball team.

What has been one of your greatest accomplishments as an athlete?

CK: Making the girls basketball team without having played basketball on a team before.

What has been one of your biggest disappointments as an athlete?

CK: Spraining my ankle during practice.

Who is a “hero” in your life and why?

CK: My mom, because she made my exchange year in Dowagiac possible.

When are you the most nervous while you are competing?

CK: Before the game when our team runs into the gym.

Describe an embarrassing athletic moment.

CK: Sometimes I cuss in German when I’m angry.

How do you tend to workout/train when by yourself?

CK: I like to go running in the fields.

What other sport would you like to compete in if you were not playing yours?

CK: Soccer.

Why are sports an important part of a high school experience?

CK: I met a lot of friends and it just feels great.

How would you give away $50,000?

CK: I would split it and give one half to homeless people and the other one to animal shelters.

If you could be the head coach of a team for a year, what team would you choose?

CK: The German soccer national team.

If I did not play sports, I would…?

CK: Watch Netflix and eat.

What is the most challenging thing for you to do in your sport?

CK: Remembering all the plays.

If you could change one rule about your sport, what would it be?

CK: Three steps instead of two.

What is the best compliment you have ever received?

CK: “Oh, you’re German? I would not have thought so. You sound so American.”

What was the scariest thing you have had to do? Are you glad you did it?

CK: Leaving my friends and family for a year. Of course, otherwise I wouldn’t be here.

What was the last thing you saw someone do that really impressed you?

CK: Not slip on the icy sidewalks.

What is your favorite hobby? Why?

CK: Team handball, because I’ve played it for eight years and it’s my favorite sport.

CK: Fun.
