Last week, I was sworn in as senator for the 21st Senate District during a ceremony in the Senate chamber. I was grateful to have my husband and children with me as I took my oath of office, which was administered by state Supreme Court Justice Stephen Markman.

As you can imagine, the first day of session of the 100th Legislature was a busy one. But despite all the activity, taking my oath of office was a solemn moment for me. It served as a reminder of the trust that you have placed in me to be your voice at the Capitol. For as long as I serve here, I will be reminded of that commitment — of who I am working for — every time I walk through the Capitol doors.

One of the benefits of running for public office is the opportunity to meet so many of our neighbors throughout southwest Michigan. Being able to discuss the issues that you care about not only helped me to get to know you better, but it also helped define my legislative priorities. As our legislative duties begin, those priorities will help guide my work.

Late last week senators received our committee assignments for the term. In addition to my previously being announced as chair of the Universities and Community Colleges Appropriations Subcommittee, I have also been selected to serve as a member of several other committees. They are the committees on Advice and Consent; Energy and Technology; Health Policy and Human Services; Insurance and Banking; Transportation and Infrastructure; and the Appropriations Subcommittee on Community Health/Human Services; in addition to the full Appropriations Committee.

From health care to insurance, transportation, and more, these committees will deal with some of the most critical issues and impactful legislation affecting southwest Michigan families.

I look forward to working with you as the term progresses, and I will be setting up regular in-district opportunities to continue the conversation about what we are doing in Lansing and how I can better serve you.
