For the past several years, Dowagiac VFW Post 1855 has helps sponsor the program Shop with a Hero.

With support from hometown Shopko store employees, Dowagiac Police, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, firemen, school teachers, Dowagiac Elks Lodge #889 and VFW Post and Auxiliary members, the Dowagiac school system was able to provide 10 deserving children with the opportunity to buy Christmas presents for their families.

The children selected must have good grades and attendance in school. After shopping with police, firemen and VFW members, gifts were wrapped by Santa’s helpers. Children are driven in police and fire vehicles to the VFW Post where they enjoy pizza and cookies with safety personnel until picked up by their parents.
