For more than two decades I wrote an annual end of the year column known as the “Three Yards and a Cloud of Dust Awards.”

It has been nearly another decade since the last one.

But I have decided to revive the column to end 2018.

Hopefully this humorous look at the best and worst of 2018 in the world of sports can put a little smile on your face.

SPORTSPERSON OF THE YEAR

I usually do not agree with Sports Illustrated’s choice, and that will be the choice again this year. It is called Sports Person of the Year. So, they selected the Golden State Warriors. No team should receive this award ever. On the other hand, I do not have a single candidate for this award.

GREATEST MOMENT

Watching the Edwardsburg football team win the school’s first state football championship. The Eddies made back-to-back Division 4 state title game appearances and brought home the title with a 28-7 win over Chelsea.

GREATEST MOMENT II

We have been waiting and wondering when or if the Notre Dame women’s basketball team would ever bring home another NCAA title.

Well, the Fighting Irish finally got the job done thanks to the killer instincts of guard Arike Ogunbowale.

BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT

Michigan football under head coach Jim Harbaugh. The Wolverines lost to Notre Dame in its regular season opener and were embarrassed by Ohio State in the regular season finale. Harbaugh and his high-paid staff continue to fail against the top teams on their schedule.

HEAD OF THE CLASS

Here are a few of the teams that won championships in 2018: Notre Dame women’s basketball, the Philadelphia Eagles, Joey Logano in NASCAR’s Monster Cup Series, Boston Red Sox, Golden State Warriors, Villanova and Patrick Reed at the Masters, among others.

WE’RE GOING TO MISS YOU

Here are some of those who died during 2018: Willie McCovey, Stan Mikita, Anne Donovan, Dwight Clark, Chuck Knox, Bruno Sammartino, Hal Greer, Rusty Staub, Oscar Gamble, JoJo White, Dan Gurney and Keith Jackson among others.
