Eddies split with Portage Central in season opener

PORTAGE CENTRAL — Visiting Edwardsburg outscored Portage Central 16-14 in the final eight minutes to pull out a 46-43 non-conference girls basketball victory over the Mustangs Tuesday night.

Portage Central (0-1) grabbed a 10-7 first quarter lead, but was outscored by the Eddies (1-0) 12-3 as Edwardsburg took a 19-13 lead into half time.

The Mustangs cut the Eddies’ lead to 30-29 by the end of the third quarter, but were unable to overcome the halftime deficit.

Kaitlyn Zaracki led a trio of Edwardsburg players in double figures with 18 points.

The Eddies also got 12 points from Claire Bartz and 11 points from Abbey Krugh.

Abby Long scored a game-high 21 points for Portage Central.

Boys basketball

A big second quarter lifted host Portage Central to a 64-45 win over Edwardsburg in non-conference boys basketball action Tuesday night.

The Mustangs (1-2) doubled up the Eddies (0-1) 14-7 after one quarter and then poured in 25 second-quarter points to open up a 39-20 halftime advantage.

Edwardsburg was unable to cut into the Portage Central lead over the final two quarters.

Colby Sidenbender led the Eddies with 10 points, He was the lone Edwardsburg player to reach double figures.

Luke Hudak finished with eight points and Zach Stryker seven.

Jason Mih led the Mustangs with a game-high 13 points.
