In a recent Letter to the Editor, the Southwestern Michigan College Candidates Town Hall was described as being “organized by an interested student group at the college.”  This is simply not true.

The truth is that a student club president was pressured and manipulated into being portrayed as organizing this event.  Upon realizing what was taking place behind the scenes, the student filed a formal complaint for being lied to and manipulated by Buszek/Foster supporters.

Being aware of these facts, the Trustees Keith McKenzie and Todd Obren made the prudent decision not to participate.

Fairness is imperative to a productive debate, and had there been a truly impartial forum offered, Keith McKenzie and Todd Obren would have willingly participated. Unfortunately, this “Candidates Town Hall” failed that test from its outset.

If Buszek/Foster were truly interested in the future of SMC they would have attended the annual long-range planning meeting. They would attend meetings and stay to hear financial reports from the auditors, annual reports from the foundation, presentations on new degree programs and to learn about what is being done to attract students to SMC.  Instead they attend meetings, read their prepared statements, and promptly leave.

SMC trustees work hard to serve the students and community.  Trustees welcome those who come forward with the best interest of the college.  We do not welcome those who hinder our advancement.   

We are proud of SMC.
