Arrest leads Niles police to uncover a weapon, drugs

NILES — The Niles Police Department uncovered a weapon and approximately $150 in crack cocaine after arresting a man who had an outstanding warrant Tuesday.

The incident occurred while the Niles Police Department Community Action Team was working to complete traffic patrols in Niles.

During their patrols, a vehicle was stopped near Sixth and Wayne streets for a traffic violation. Elbert Leon Briggs, 24, was identified as a passenger in the vehicle and was taken into custody for an outstanding warrant. During a search of the vehicle, a loaded 9mm semi-auto pistol and several individually packaged bags of crack cocaine were located at the spot Briggs had been sitting, according to Captain Kevin Kosten, with the Niles Police Department. The total street value of the crack cocaine seized was approximated to be $150.

Briggs was arraigned yesterday at the 5th District Court in Niles and given a bond of $17,500 cash or surety.

Briggs was issued the following charges:

• Possess crack cocaine with intent to deliver (less than 50 grams) — felony

• Carry concealed firearm in automobile — felony

  Felon in possession of firearm — felony

  Possess firearm in commission of felony

• Warrant for motor vehicle-unlawful use — misdemeanor
