CASS COUNTY — Domestic Violence Awareness Month is right around the corner. During the month of October, Domestic and Sexual Abuse Services will host three major events.

The community is invited to “shine a light” on domestic violence at two candlelight vigils. DASAS leaders say the event is designed to remember those lost to domestic violence, and help survivors heal.

The first of two vigils will be hosted at the main branch of the Cass District Library, 319 M-62 North in Cassopolis. The event begins at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9.

A second vigil will be hosted at the St. Joseph County (Michigan) courthouse, 125 W. Main St., Centerville, MI 49032. This event begins at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18.

Also in support of Domestic and Sexual Abuse Services, the organization will host The Great Gatsby Gala, a masquerade charity event, at 7 p.m. Oct. 20. The event is being hosted at Round Oak Revisited/Philo’s Pub, 137 S. Front St., Dowagiac.

Cost for the event is $30 per person, which includes one drink ticket, hors d’oeuvres and dessert.  Cocktail attire is requested.

Symbolizing the fact that some survivors may want to put on a mask in order to seem healthy and perfect to the outside world, the event is masquerade style, and masks are required. A limited amount of masks will be available for purchase at the event.

The masquerade will feature music, food, raffles, cash bar, silent auction, entertainment, a masquerade contest auctions and more.

Both events are open to the public. Questions may be directed to rosep@dasasmi.org.
