NOVAK: Giving them the keys to the kingdom

The NCAA must be out of its mind as they are proposing allowing college players, and even a select few high school seniors to have agents.
Talk about giving them the keys to the kingdom!
This is some sort of knee-jerk reaction to the FBI led investigation into the scandal that has rocked more than one major university’s basketball program.
But to allow agents on campus, in high school hallways and at summer camps its beyond the pail.
I have been the talking heads on television for the past couple of days and one thing seems to keep popping up.
They keep saying that the NCAA wants to control the narrative.
How do they intend to do that when they cannot even control the rampant cheating that is going on in all of college athletics?
A great analogy came from “Golic and Wingo” on ESPN Thursday morning when they referenced the movie “Blue Chips” when “friends of the program”’ literally drove up and dropped off a bag full of cash to a top high school prospect.
So now you were telling me the NCAA is going to be able to control the bidding wars over these top players that will be taking place in high schools and on college campuses?
Not a chance.
I wrote a column earlier this year questioning where amateur athletics was heading.
With this move by the NCAA, I can see that they are about to throw the baby out with the bath water.
I agree that something has to be done to curb the rampant cheating that has been going on for decades right under their noses.
But I am not sure this is the right direction to be going in.
While I have watched many fine young high school basketball players in our area throughout the years, I doubt I will get to cover one who will be tagged an elite prospect and be able to have an agent.
I can only imagine the horror that sports writers will go through dealing with those top prospects, many of which are already out of control and drunk with their power.
I hope that someone will realize how bad an idea this really is before the college game is destroyed completely.
I love amateur athletics. But the only place you can really still find that is at the local high school level.
But even there, club teams and travel teams are turning players into divas that argue with their regular coaches and treat people with little or no respect.
