NOVAK: Big doings in southwest Michigan

Two of the biggest events of the summer will take place on the same day this year.

The 44th annual RedBud Nationals in Buchanan and the 45th annual International Cherry Pit Spit in Eau Claire.

Now I understand that the two events are nothing like each other as far as importance to the national sports scene.

But they both are significant in the world of sports. There is no doubt.

The fact that the pit spit is still going strong after 45 years amazes me.

It still draws a big crowd and enough competitors to make it worth your time to check it out if you have not done so.

RedBud is the biggest stop on the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Series schedule and is on equal footing as NASCAR’s Daytona 500 and Indy Cars’ Indianapolis 500.

Thousands of people make the trek each year to Buchanan to watch the world’s best motocross riders try to add their name to the list of legends who have picked up a victory.

As of now the weather looks like it is going to cooperate, so head over to Buchanan or Eau Claire the weekend after the Fourth of  July and enjoy two spectacular events.
