DOWAGIAC — The postseason did not last long for the Niles baseball and softball teams.

The Vikings were eliminated in Division 2 district play at Dowagiac on Saturday.

The Niles baseball team was upset by the host Chieftains 1-0, while the softball team was defeated by Lakeshore 10-0 in the championship game.

Dowagiac and Niles were locked in a pitcher’s duel for the entire seven innings as senior Brendan Dudley and Vikings’ junior Brayden Lake combined to give up just eight hits.

Dudley tossed a five-hitter with eight strikeouts and just two walks, while Lake fashioned a three-hitter with six strikeouts and a pair of walks.

One of the three hits that Lake gave up came in the top of the seventh when A.J. Kidd singled just inside the third-base bag to score Cody Dorman, who was hit by a pitch to open the inning and moved to second on a balk.

Following a fly-out to left field, Kidd singled home the game-winning run.

“We had some runners on in a couple of situations where we needed the big hit, we didn’t get it,” said Niles coach Mike Vota. “I was happy we did not strike out a ton, but we struck out sometimes when it really mattered with runners in scoring position. It’s been our Achille’s heel all year and that is what came back to get us now.”

Brayden Lake, who took the loss, was 2-for-3 to lead the Niles offense.

On the mound, he struck out six and walked just two, while giving up one run on three hits.

Lakeshore defeated Dowagiac 12-1 in the championship game.

The Lancers, who are the defending Division 2 state champions, defeated No. 1-ranked Edwardsburg 5-2 in the semifinals.
