Vikings split with Lakeshore; Eddies drop Bucks

STEVENSVILLE — The Niles baseball team remained at .500 on the season following a split with SMAC West Division arch rival Lakeshore Tuesday.
The Vikings (13-13) edged the Lancers 4-3 in the opening, but were stung by Lakeshore 11-1 in the nightcap.
Niles scored a pair of runs with two outs in the top of the seventh to take the first game.
Drew Gourley singled with two outs and moved to second on a single by Cole Simpson.
Cade Vota delivered third consecutive hit for the Vikings to tie the score at 3-3 when Gourley crossed the plate.
The game-winning hit came off the bat of Chad Barton, who singled to centerfield to score Simpson.
Lakeshore got a two-out single off of Simpson, who picked up the victory in relief, in the bottom of the seventh, but could not rally against the Vikings.
Simpson came on in the sixth inning in relief of starter Tayton Stevens and gave up just the one single, while striking out a pair of Lancers.
Niles finished with nine hits in the game, including a 3-for-4 performance by Vota, who doubled and drove in a run.
Barton finished with two hits and an RBI, while Brayden Lake drove in a pair of runs.
The Lancers used a pair of four-run innings to blow out Niles in the nightcap.
Johnny Bybee started and took the loss for the Vikings. Chandler Dodd worked four innings of relief.
Nile was held to four hits in the second game — all singles.
Lakeshore drove in the lone run for Niles, which was back in action Wednesday against visiting Mattawan.
Buchanan baseball
BUCHANAN — Visiting Edwardsburg improved to 23-4 with a 12-1 win over Buchanan in a non-conference contest Tuesday.
Edwardsburg led 2-1 after one inning and 7-1 heading into the sixth when it scored five times.
The Eddies had 11 hits in the contest against a pair of different Buchanan pitchers.
Matt Hepler was 3-for-3 with five RBIs, while Landen Cebra went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs.
Austin Hurt and Chris Griffin both doubles for Edwardsburg.
Jarrett Tighe went the distance, allowing two hits with a pair of strikeouts.
Jacob Hoover started and took the loss for the Bucks. Dylan Colglazier took the hill in relief for Buchanan.
Kade Hearington and Hoover both singled for the Bucks.
Brandywine baseball
NILES — Host Brandywine swept a pair of BCS Athletic Conference baseball games from Bridgman Tuesday.
The Bobcats improved to 15-12 overall with 4-0 and 4-3 wins over the Bees.
In the opening game, Ty Mickiewicz doubled and was the winning pitcher for Brandywine, which also got a double from Corbin Eckenberger.
“This was the first time this year we played two complete games in the same day,” said Brandywine coach David Sidenbender. “It is fun when you execute and play well, win or looe, but most often than not, they are wins if you do those things.”
Brandywine outhit Bridgman 8-5 in the contest.
Eckenberger was the winning pitcher in the nightcap.
Jakob Luczkowski had three hits, including the game-winning in the bottom of the sixth inning, which scored Jacob Fox.
Joey Coveyeou hit a three-run home run for the Bobcats.
“Joey Covyeou has showed great leadership this year and really led us at the plate today, along with the freshmen that were brought up. — Jakob Luczkowski and Jacob Fox. All three of them had huge hits for us in game 2.”
