Dogwood Festival to host Harp Twins

DOWAGIAC — One night, Jim Benedix, chair of the Dogwood Fine Arts Festival, was browsing through videos on YouTube, when he stumbled across a video of two women, both blonde and blue-eyed, wearing matching outfits as they strolled through a comic book store. What set this video apart from the many videos on the streaming platform is that the women were carrying with them massive black harps as they played the theme to popular sitcom “The Big Bang Theory.”

“I just sort of stumbled upon them as YouTube kept feeding through related videos to what I was watching,” Benedix said. “They are very interesting young ladies.”

Once Benedix saw the women — known as the Harp Twins — perform, he knew he had to find a way to bring them to Dowagiac, he said. He ended up being successful in his pursuit, and the Harp Twins will serve as the closing act of the Dogwood Fine Arts Festival.

The Harp Twins will perform at 7:30 p.m. May 19 at Southwestern Michigan College, 58900 Cherry Grove Road, Dowagiac. Tickets are $20.

The group, consisting of twins Camille and Kennerly Kitt, is known for playing pop culture music on classic acoustic harps, in addition to electric harps. On their popular, YouTube channel with more than half a million subscribers, the duo can be seen decked out in a number of video-specific outfits as they play everything from Metallica to Led Zeppelin to the “Star Wars” theme song.

“They take game themes or TV show themes, pop music, heavy metal, anything and they rearrange it to fit a harp duet,” Benedix explained. “They are classically trained, but they decided that they didn’t want their music to be strictly on stage in long, black gowns. They clearly wanted something that reflected their taste in music and their culture as young people.”

Benedix said he believes the people of Dowagiac will react favorably to the Harp Twins being included in the Dogwood Fine Arts Festival line up and that others will be pleased with the music as he was, whether they are teenagers or senior citizens.

“They really transcend age. We have already sold a lot of tickets out of town, so we assume we will attract a lot of young people,” he said. “But for someone my age, who is still listening to the rock and roll music that I grew up with, to hear those songs rearranged for the electric harp is a whole different experience. And heavy metal never sounded so good as it does on an electric harp.”

Benedix said he hopes the public will turn out to the final event of the 2018 Dogwood Fine Arts Festival.

“[The Harp Twins] are just great,” he said. “We are excited to have them cap off the festival.”
