Dowagiac splits pair of non-league games

DOWAGIAC — Host Dowagiac split a pair of non-conference baseball games with Watervliet at Rotary Park Tuesday.

The Panthers won a wild 16-13 decision over the Chieftains in the opening game.

Dowagiac bounced back to take the nightcap 8-5 in a game that was called after five innings due to darkness.

In the opening game, the Panthers led 16-9 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning.

The Chieftains scored twice in the final two innings to cut the lead to three runs, but were unable to overcome the early deficit.

Dowagiac finished with just six hits in the contest, including a double by Brenden Dudley.

In the nightcap, the Chieftains led 8-2 before Watervliet scored three times in the top of the fourth inning to make it a contest.

Dylan Elmore went the distance for the Chieftains, scattering seven hits, to pick up the victory.

Dowagiac finished with nine hits, including another double by Dudley.

Watervliet defeated Dowagiac 3-1 and 17-0 as the Chieftains dropped to 1-11 on the season.

In the first game, Watervliet scored all three of its runs in the second inning.

Dowagiac’s lone run of the day came in the bottom half of third inning.

Dowagiac managed just one hit against the Panthers in the opening game.

In the nightcap, the Chieftains were held to just a pair of hits by the Panthers.

Dowagiac returns to action Thursday when they host Plainwell in Wolverine Conference action.
