Eddies take pair from Vikings

EDWARDSBURG — Host Edwardsburg improved to 12-1 with a sweep of Niles in non-conference baseball Thursday.

The Eddies won the first game 12-5 before completing the sweep with a 10-0 victory in the nightcap.

The opening game got off to a strong start as the Eddies scored on a fielder’s choice by Ryan Pabreza, a double by Jonah Sibley and an error in the second inning.

After Niles scored one run in the top of the fourth, the Eddies answered with one of their own. Niles scored when Cade Vota’s sac fly drove in a run.

Edwardsburg answered when Matt Hepler’s sac fly scored a run.

The Eddies pulled away for good with three runs in the second inning.

Pabreza to hit into a fielder’s choice, but a run scored, while Sibley doubled on a 2-1 count, scoring another run. The final run crossed the plate on an error.

Edwardsburg scored six runs in the sixth inning.

Landen Cebra, Hunter Bedell, Austin Hurt, Sibley and Devin Pulling all contributed in the big inning with RBIs.

Layne Tinkham earned the win for the Eddies. He went the distance, allowing 10 hits and five runs while striking out nine and walking none.

Johnny Bybee took the loss for Niles. He allowed three hits and six runs over four innings, striking out one.

Sibley, Pabreza, Chris Griffin, Pulling, Cebra, Hurt and Hepler each collected one hit to lead Edwardsburg.

Niles finished with 10 hits in the game. Chad Barton and Kendall Whitelow all had multiple hits for Niles.

Two Edwardsburg pitchers combined to shutout Niles in the nightcap.

In the first inning, Edwardsburg got its offense started when Hepler doubled on a 1-0 count, scoring one run.

Edwardsburg notched four runs in the fifth inning. The Eddies scored its runs on an RBI single by Austin Hurt.

Cebra was credited with the victory for Edwardsburg Eddies Varsity. He lasted four innings, allowing one hit and zero runs while striking out six and walking one. Jarrett Tighe threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen.

Chandler Dodd took the loss for Niles. He allowed seven hits and six runs over three innings, striking out two.

Edwardsburg tallied 11 hits in the game.

Cebra, Hepler, Hurt and Caden Goggins each had multiple hits for the Varsity. Cebra led they way with three hits in three at bats.

Cade Vota went 1-for-2 at the plate to lead Niles in hits.
