DOWAGIAC — Southwestern Michigan College hosted an Outstanding Graduate Reception April 19 at the Dale A. Lyons Building on SMC’s Dowagiac campus. There, students got some words of advice from college leaders.

Trustee Beth Cripe was among those who spoke.

“As a reminder learning is a lifelong activity, I share rules I gave my own children growing up,” Cripe said. “Have a good attitude and MOVE! … When you add that special ingredient, action, you can’t be stopped.”

The mother of two and a trustee since 2011 has worked in development for Dowagiac’s Borgess-Lee Memorial Hospital since 2007. She earned a master’s degree in business administration from Loyola University, a bachelor’s degree in economics from Albion College and serves on the CASA (Court-Appointed Special Advocates) board, championing children in foster care.

“Always give a focused, concentrated effort,” Cripe said. “Many people think they’re good at multi-tasking. They are not fooling anyone except themselves. Do one thing well at a time, then go on to the next project.

During his opening remarks, President Dr. David Mathews reminded the audience of SMC’s roots.

“In 1964, the place we’re sitting was a cornfield. A group of community citizens thought the way to help our region advance socially and economically was to add a college to provide affordable access to high-quality education,” Mathews said.

Gail Shirey, communications, 2017 fulltime faculty member of the year, and Donna Courtney, science, adjunct faculty member of the year, read honor graduates’ names.
