NILES — It seems that the Niles Gives Back event is just going to keep on giving.

After Steve Cabe, 24, of Niles, organized the event on March 14 with the aim to raise money and donations for February’s flood victims, he got another call from a local business who wanted to support his efforts.

Dennis Rook, the president of Benton Metal Recycling, read about the event in the newspaper and decided to donate $1,700 to match the funds Cabe raised at the Niles Gives Back event.

“We want to help the community and the surrounding communities.” Rook said. “People who support us we try to support them.”

Rook said giving has been a foundation of Benton Metal Recycling and that the organization has also donated in the past to the Benton Harbor Public Safety Department and the Benton Harbor school system.

Rook said keeping the money local to support local residents is important to him.

Cabe collected the check and then donated it to the Niles Salvation Army, where flood victims have been able to get a variety of resources for restoring their lives post flood.
