Shearer inducted into hall

DOWAGIAC — Former Dowagiac standout Michael Shearer, who went on to star at Muskegon Community College and Iowa State University, was inducted into the National Junior College Wrestling Hall of Fame Feb. 24.

Shearer was a two-time all-conference wrestler at Dowagiac where he recorded 58 victories over a two-year stretch.

He went 34-0 in 1966 and won the state championship at 120 pounds.

Shearer took his talents to Muskegon Community College where he wrestled in 1967 and 1968.

As a sophomore, Shearer held the Jayhawks win the NJCAA national wrestling championship.

He was 30-0 in his two years at Muskegon and was the Michigan Community College state champion both seasons, as well as, the outstanding wrestler of 1969.

He was the Jayhawks’ first national champion.

Shearer was an assistant coach at Muskegon during the 1969-70 season before transferring to Iowa State where he wrestled his junior and senior seasons.

While at Iowa State he wrestled not only with Taylor, but another Olympian, Dan Gable.

Shearer still lives in Dowagiac with his wife Connie. They have three children — Stacey, Louis and Adam, along with seven grandchildren.
