THREE RIVERS — For the first time since 2011, the Dowagiac boys basketball team won the Class B district championship Friday night.

Dowagiac defeated Paw Paw 66-48 at Three Rivers High School.

The Chieftains (16-5) advance to the Class B regional semifinals at Coloma Monday night. Dowagiac will face Wayland Union (10-12), which upset Wolverine Conference champion Otsego, at 6 p.m.

Benton Harbor (22-1) will face Hudsonville Unity Christian (19-4) in the second semifinal at 8 p.m.

The Chieftains needed to defeat Wolverine Conference foe Paw Paw (11-12) for a third time this season. Dowagiac had previously defeated Paw Paw 62-51 and 57-54.

In those two games, Paw Paw’s Luke Tolliver score more than 30 points.

Friday night, thanks mainly to the defensive effort of senior J.J. Smith, Tolliver was held by just 11 points.

Dowagiac was led by sophomore D.J. Lanier’s 19 points.
