LETTER: Drugs, alcohol, mental illness

Prohibition, the term used to describe the effort to end alcohol abuse, lasted less than 14 years. It ceased because it didn’t work. We now have a system that allows the regulated sale of alcohol, while admitting that alcoholism is a disease.

The war on other drugs such as opium, marijuana, heroin, and cocaine has been going on for a century and has been constantly escalating. I would think that by now that the consensus would be that it is not working. It has increased the work of, and the danger to the police, it has increased the number and cost of jails, and it has contributed to the breakup of families with increased poverty and emotional illness.

Drug dependency is equivalent to alcoholism and should be treated medically. The job of the police should be to arrest unlicensed suppliers of these drugs. Please contact your representative if you agree.
