Davis C. Newman, 87, of Niles, passed away at his home on Monday, Feb. 12, 2018, unexpectedly, but of natural causes.
On Feb. 4, 1931, in Kalamazoo County, Davis was born to the late Arthur and Zonna (Davis) Newman.
After graduating from high school, Davis went on to serve his country proudly in the United States Army. He continued his education with IUSB where he received his degree in accounting.
On Dec. 4, 1954, Davis wed Opal Pauline Harlan and they celebrated 44 years of marriage, until she passed in 1999. Davis once again found love and he wed Mary Jane Gibson on June 24, 2000.
He enjoyed fishing, and several sports including golf, bowling and softball. He was an avid Notre Dame fan and rooted for the Detroit Tigers whenever they took the field.
Preceding Davis is his first wife, Opal Newman; his parents, Arthur and Zonna Newman; a granddaughter, Ellie Price and a sister, Marva Houser.
Davis is survived by his wife, Mary Jane; his children; Shirley (Dan) Stevens, Gary (Kim) Newman, and Michael (Tina) Newman all of Niles; he is also survived by Mary Jane’s children, Steve (Pat) Gibson, of Niles, Daniel (Joanne) Gibson of Akron, Ohio, Kathryn (Martin) Flynn of Niles, and Janna Gibson, also of Niles. Davis will also be missed by his grandchildren, Aaron (Kesi) Stevens, Mallory (Angie) Stevens-Carr, Adam Stevens, Jenna (Brad) Zache, Alex Newman, Kalie (Matthew) Wieger, Nicole (Dan Reidenbach) Newman, Carlie Newman, Tressa Hullinger, Carlye Gibson, Jessica (Bart) Crouch, Joshua (Maryann) Pears, Jordan (Danielle) Gibson, Danielle (Michael) Lockwood, Jacob Price, Tom (Kaley) Flynn; 19 great-grandchildren, and a brother, Leon Newman of Milford, Indiana.
A memorial service to celebrate Davis’ life will at 11 a.m. be Friday, Feb. 16, 2018, with a time of visitation beginning one hour prior at 10 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church at 1340 Sycamore Street, in Niles. His family will gather privately for a committal service at Mission Hills Memorial Gardens.
Those wishing to make a memorial donation in honor of Davis may do so to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, or they may also chose to direct it to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
