Leon George Asmus, 90, of Niles, died on Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 7, 2018, at his home of natural causes.

He was born on April 4, 1927, in Niles to Leon G. and Frieda M. (Koomler) Asmus, and was graduated from Niles High School in 1945. He enlisted in the United States Army and was honorably discharged as a veteran of World War II. On his return to Niles, he was employed at the former Niles plant of Tyler Refrigeration, from which he retired in 1985 following thirty-nine years of years of service. He has lived in Niles all of his life.

Leon was a member of Saint John’s United Church of Christ in Niles. He enjoyed golfing and bowling with the Tyler league teams, and was quite proficient at both, as well as playing poker and euchre with friends and family. He also enjoyed maintaining his garden, especially the potatoes and blueberries.

In 1947, in Niles he married the former Carolyn J. Sellers with whom he celebrated the remarkable 67th anniversary of their wedding prior to her death on Oct. 8, 2014. They were also sadly preceded in death by two sons, Mark P. Asmus and Andrew L. Asmus.

Surviving family includes two sons, Kevin D. (Melissa) Asmus of Niles and Clifford V. (Barbara) Asmus of Minneapolis, Minnesota; 12 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren; and Leon’s sister, Mary Ellen Holloway of Niles, and several nieces and nephews.

The family of Leon Asmus is gathering privately at Saint John’s United Church of Christ to honor his life and share memories, with the Rev. Raymond Fulbright of the church leading them.
