OUR VIEW: Rallying around a hero in need

The usual spectacle of a Cassopolis Rangers basketball game took a back seat to the spirit of unity and support Friday evening.
In response to the recent shooting of Michigan State Police trooper Aaron Steensma — a native of Cassopolis — the community rallied in support of the officer, who is currently hospitalized in serious but stable condition, according to officials with the department. Proceeds from Friday’s game between the Cassopolis Rangers and Decatur Raiders was donated to Steensma and his family, totalling more than $1,200.
In response to the donation, Jesse Binns, the community service trooper with the Niles MSP post and a fellow Cassopolis native, addressed the crowd, thanking them supporting a fellow Ranger and brother in blue.
In a time when many across the country hold an intense distrust of the men and women working in law enforcement, it is heartening to see Cassopolis rally around Steensma in his time of need.
As Steensma’s tragic situation demonstrates, those who step up to don the badge and protect their neighbors are often placed in serious danger. Even those with criticisms on how policing is conducted should recognize this fact, and appreciate the risks state troopers and others in law enforcement take in order to maintain the peace that we so often take for granted.
Those who want to contribute to Steensma and his family during their time in need may do so by making a donation to the Michigan State Troopers Assistance Fund, and writing “D/Sgt. Aaron Steensma” in the “Memory/Honor/Support of:” box on the form. Checks may also be mailed to 1715 Abbey Road, Suite B, East Lansing, MI 48823.
