(Brett Scanlon is a senior placekicker for the Michigan State Spartans, who are facing Washington State in the San Diego Credit Union Holiday Bowl at 9 p.m. Dec. 28. Scanlon is chronicling his trip to the holiday bowl)

We had our first practice today. It went well.

After that we went to Mission Beach and hung out for a while. My teammates and I enjoyed a sushi dinner next to the beach.

Following that, we went out to a country bar called Moonshine Flats. There was a live band there.

Then we went to a nightclub and saw Ty Dolla Sign perform live. Again, the people of San Diego treated us great!

Day 3

We had practice No. 2 today and it went great.

Guys had a lot of energy. Very productive practice.

After practice we received some bowl gifts such as an Ogio backpack, a new era hat and a bowl game T-shirt.

Tonight, the hotel had a welcome dinner for the entire MSU staff. It was very good.

Some of my teammates got up and played the piano and performed some live music during the dinner.

After that we relaxed in the players’ lounge and played pool, ping pong and arcade games. Tomorrow we go to the zoo.

Day 4

Today was a lot of fun. We took a trip to the San Diego Zoo.

We saw monkeys, tigers, lions, elephants, giraffes, hippos, etc.

Really any animal that you can think of, we saw. I think the part I enjoyed most was seeing the tigers. They were very active while we were there. It was a fun experience.

If you ever get the opportunity to go I would definitely recommend it.

Overall it was an awesome day. It was great to spend Christmas Day with my team.

My parents are coming Tuesday and I’m looking forward to seeing them.
