Police release name of deceased Buchanan hunter

Authorities have named the hunter who was discovered dead outside a forest on Pokagon Highway near Dowagiac Thursday evening, according to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.

The deceased was 67-year-old David Wayne Newsom, of Buchanan. Police believe the man died of a heart attack while hunting in the woods, located in the 30000 block of Pokagon Highway, near Hampshire Street in Pokagon Township.

Cass County deputies were dispatched to the address around 5:30 p.m. Authorities believe the man suffered a heart attack while attempting to carry a dead deer out of the woods, as the corpse of the animal was located nearby.

At this time the death does not appear to be suspicious, police said.

Members of the Southwestern Michigan Community Ambulance Service and Pokagon Fire Department assisted authorities at the scene.
