Who is telling the truth? How would we know?

Someone once said, “A lie can travel halfway around the world before truth gets its shoes on.”

Governor Pontius Pilate was a Roman official serving in Judea (Israel) in the days of Jesus Christ. The religious leaders of the Jews and their systems were being threatened by the revolutionary teachings of this Man Jesus Christ who said he was the son of God.

The Jews desired to kill Jesus to shut him up, but had to have the consent of Pilate.

The Jews brought Jesus before Pilate and accused Jesus of high treason because he declared Himself to be the Son of God. Pilate said he could find no fault in Jesus and asked this question, recorded in the New Testament gospel of John, chapter 18, verse 38: “What is truth?”

That same question resonates today in this time of “fake news,” half-truths, and outright lies. What is truth; where is truth?

In the Old Testament book of Proverbs, we read in chapter 23, verse 23, “Buy the truth and do not sell it, get wisdom and instruction and understanding.” Getting to truth will require diligent searching. The search for truth will require wisdom, which almighty God promises to all who ask for it (James 1:5).

Truth is divine; it comes from almighty God. When you seek truth with an open and honest heart, you will find it.

The Old Testament prophet Jeremiah said, “You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:13). Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life…” (John 14:6).

There is a very secure promise that if you are really looking for truth, you will find it. In these days of severe truth drought, turn your back on politically-motivated fake news and seek out the real truth and the real giver of truth, Jesus Christ.
