Remember and Celebrate America!

We are in that short period of time between Memorial Day and Independence Day — both days that our leaders have set aside for special notice.

First, Memorial Day to honor countless millions who gave their time, their talent, and for some, their lives, to defend this country against every style of tyranny imaginable. There are not enough words to thank them; we can only humbly acknowledge and honor their great sacrifice.

Next, Independence Day — the day when we declared our independence from our colonial masters, the English. Some continue to warn that this great experiment in liberty will not last, but it has, and, even with all our differences, we still enjoy the freedom to be different and voice it.

Somebody said that America would never fall to a foreign invader; but that, if we fall, we will crumble from within. Any thinking person would have to admit that, these days, that “crumbling from within” seems to be taking place. The Old Testament prophet Hosea warned in Hosea, chapter 8, verse 7, “they sow the wind and they reap the whirlwind.” Every word, every action has consequences. Irresponsible rhetoric does not help anybody.

America is a great institution. It is not perfect, but it’s better than any other place on this earth.

It might seem lame to say again that we should put aside petty differences and unite to make this country work. But we do need to be reminded of this over and over again, because sometimes we lose perspective, or perhaps there are those who are not familiar with how this “great experiment” came to be and, therefore, take it for granted.

There are still people putting their lives on the line every day to protect what we have. Let us focus on them and whatever ideals they hold to that leads them to such a sacrifice.

Remember and celebrate. Never shun an opportunity to tout this great country of ours and to praise Almighty God who literally is keeping us all together.
