Athlete Showcase: Brandywine’s Sam Burge

Sam Burge is a senior on the Brandywine wrestling team.

 

What has been one of your greatest accomplishments as an athlete?

SB: Making it to state in wrestling as a junior.

 

What has been one of your biggest disappointments as an athlete?

SB: Losing 3-1 in overtime in the “blood round” at state.

 

What has been a hardship in your life?

SB: Losing people close to me and living without them.

 

Who is a “hero” in your life and why?

SB: Brad Light, since he was the man that taught me to work and get things done differently.

 

When are you the most nervous while you are competing?

SB: Right before a match.

 

Describe an embarrassing athletic moment.

SB: Getting upset after a match and losing control of my emotions.

 

How do you tend to work out/train when by yourself?

SB: I focus on the task at hand, knowing I am working harder than some people.

 

What other sport would you like to compete in if you were not playing yours?

SB: I would play tennis.

 

Why are sports an important part of a high school experience?

SB: They teach me valuable skills such as teamwork and leadership.

 

How would you give away $50,000?

SB: I would donate it to local Boy Scout troops.

 

If you could be the head coach of a team for a year, what team would you choose?

SB: I would coach the MYWA teams, so I could teach young kids to wrestle.

 

If I did not play sports, I would…?

SB: Focus more heavily on school, and probably get a job.

What is the most challenging thing for you to do in your sport?

SB: Cutting weight.

 

If you could change one rule about your sport, what would it be?

SB: I would change the structure of practice length in sports.

 

What is the best compliment you have ever received?

SB: That you may not be the strongest, the fastest or the best, but you are the hardest worker.

 

What was the scariest thing you have had to do? Are you glad you did it?

SB: Walking in 105-degree weather to complete my Eagle Scout project. I am really happy I finished it.

 

What was the last thing you saw someone do that really impressed you?

SB: See a fellow classmate who was beyond out of shape try sports and end up excelling in them.

 

What is your favorite hobby? Why?

SB: I enjoy board games. Since they provide a mental challenge.
