Cassopolis man accidentally shot in leg

An accidental shooting sent a Cassopolis man to the hospital Monday afternoon.
Justin Anderson, 42, was accidentally shot in the leg by his neighbor, who was target shooting with a .223 rifle. One of his rounds missed the target and went through a wooded area and hit Anderson, who was approximately 500 to 600 yards away according to Cass County deputies.
Anderson was transported to the hospital by private party for treatment of his non-life threatening injuries.
Sheriff Behnke would like to remind Cass County residents that it is very important to practice proper gun safety. Those using guns should make sure to have the proper backstop, shoot toward a safe and unoccupied area and to know where their rounds are going.
If you are negligent in using your firearm safely you can be charged with a crime. The penalty increases based on the seriousness of the dam ages caused by the crime.
The suspect’s name is being withheld pending review by the Cass County Prosecutor’s Office.
