Niles Community Schools Looks Forward to 2017

As students wrap up their studies for winter break, I wanted to take the time to thank everyone for making 2016 a year to remember. Ongoing construction projects have set the stage for continued improvements and we look forward to working closely with the community on future progress in our schools.
We were able to begin construction on bond work this past spring and have made advancements to our facilities that will provide students with safe and secure learning environments for years to come. These construction efforts mean more efficient buildings and classrooms and updated technology, giving students the chance to focus solely on academics. We are thankful for the support from everyone in Niles as we continue these enhancement projects over the coming years.
Niles Community Schools accomplished a lot of important and positive work in 2016 and our vision is to carry that influence the remainder of the school year. To that end, the sinking fund renewal will ensure our schools are kept in good repair, offering a warm and inviting environment essential to optimizing the learning experience for our students. Our goal is to give our students the best we can offer and these goals are achieved because of a supportive community like we have here in Niles.
To keep the momentum going over the holiday break, it is important to maintain the advances that children have made in their studies, as learning loss over extended periods away from school can cause children to forget what they have learned. Thus, I encourage parents to keep children engaged with stimulating activities throughout their time off to effectively enhance student learning and equip students with necessary tools upon returning to school. The award winning Niles District Library, the Niles-Buchanan YMCA, and various church organizations are all offering wonderful holiday season activities.
Looking forward into 2017, we must maintain our focus and commitment to providing the best education for our students as they move forward into future success. We are excited to continue working with community partners to provide opportunities for our schools to collaborate with businesses and other organizations to help our city thrive.
With but a few days remaining until another new year, the future is extremely bright in Niles as we work tirelessly together to strengthen our community by building upon the strides developed over the past several years. I am eager to begin the New Year and am excited by the continued evolution of the unmatched educational experience our schools provide our community’s children.
On behalf of everyone at Niles Community Schools, best wishes for a very happy holidays.

Dr. Dan Applegate is Superintendent at Niles Community Schools.
