Portage Central sweeps Vikings

PORTAGE — Host Portage Central needed overtime to knock off Niles in SMAC West Division girls basketball action Friday night.

The Mustangs outscored the Vikings 9-4 in the extra session to pull out the 45-40 victory.

Niles trailed 15-13 after one and 22-19 at the intermission.

The Vikings outscored Portage Central 17-14 in the second half to force the overtime.

Emily Gaines scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Vikings, who dropped to 0-5 on the season.

Niles also got 12 points from Alycia Patterson.

Kenzie Pikkart had 17 points to lead the Mustangs.

The Vikings dropped a 55-43 decision to Portage Central in boys basketball action Friday night.

Niles (1-2, 0-1 SMAC West) trailed 28-21 at halftime, but was outscored 30-20 in the second half.

Alex Harpenau had 19 points and seven rebounds to lead the Vikings, who also got nine points from Tre Gray and Austin Brooks.

Austin McCullogh led the Mustangs with 18 points.
