Bobcats win both Rivalry for a Cure games

The Brandywine girls and boys basketball teams took to the court Friday night to face the rival Bees of Bridgman in what has become known as the annual Rivalry for a Cure game.

Both schools sold t-shirts to raise money to combat cancer, then came together to honor the Brian Parker Foundation and play a couple of basketball games.

After Brandywine breezed to a 59-43 win in the girls game, the boys team used a complete team effort to knock off the Bees 56-39 in an early BCS Conference matchup.

“It was a great team effort tonight,” said Brandywine coach Nathan Knapp. “We don’t really expect kids to step up, we are nine to 10 deep so whoever is on, let’s find that rotation and let’s go. All around great team win.”

The Bobcats jumped out to a 13-7 lead after one quarter thanks to some sharp shooting from long range. Brandywine, which hit eight 3-point baskets in the game, had three in the first quarter with seniors Hunter Slaughter (2) and Brady Duval each connecting on their open looks.

“We have Hunter and Brady that can shoot lights out when they are on,” Knapp said. “But we have a lot of good shooters on the team.”

In the second quarter, seniors JeRod Glenn and Scott Miller got in on the long-range action, as they each would knock down a three as Brandywine a slim 25-21 lead at the break.

The second half is where the Bobcats really asserted themselves offensively and defensively, as they got aggressive on both ends of the floor.

“We are a quick and athletic team,” Knapp said. “Bridgman got in our heads in the first half and we were rushing things instead of running our sets, but in the second half we got back into our game and played aggressive pressure defense, we attacked the basket and we played a great half.”

The Bobcats outscored the Bees 12-3 in the third quarter to extend their lead to 37-24.

Slaughter and fellow senior Vinny Peel paced the Bobcats with 13 points each, followed by Duval with 11.

The Bobcats, now 4-0, will play Eau Claire on Tueday.

Bridgman led 10-8 after one quarter of the girls game, but was outscored 51-23 the rest of the way.

Brandywine (4-2) opened up a 10-point advantage (28-18) by halftime and led 48-22 heading into the fourth quarter.

Nicole Sachman scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Bobcats, who also got 13 points from Zakiyyah Abdullah and 10 points from Makenna Bowen.

Brandywine played without senior Mia Stella, who is recovering from surgery to repair a broken nose.

Brooke Janes led Bridgman with 12 points.
