Big third quarter helps Dowagiac square record

ALLEGAN — A 26-point third quarter turned a close game into a blowout as visiting Dowagiac defeated Allegan 53-7 in Wolverine Conference action Friday night.

Despite playing without several key players, including starting running back Kevin Whitaker, who has been lost for the season after having Achilles surgery on Tuesday, the Chieftains were able to square their record at 2-2.

The Tigers drop to 0-4 with the loss.

Dowagiac finished the eight with 272 yards of total offense, including 187 rushing.

Defensively, the Chieftains limited Allegan to 176 yards of offense (92 rushing and 84 passing).

Shiquan Write rushed for 96 yards on two carries, including a 91-yard touchdown.

Erik Walker added 56 yards and a 5-yard run, while he caught a 66-yard touchdown pass from Brenden Dudley, who was 2-of-6 for 80 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

He also threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Caleb Murphy. Murphy added a 4-yard touchdown run.

Also scoring for the Chieftains were Richard Payne on an 8-yard run and Duan Simpson on a 6-yard run.

J.J. Smith returned an interception 66-yards for the score. He finished the night with a pair of picks.

Collin Hassle led the Chieftains with 11 tackles, including four for loss.

Dowagiac returns home to face undefeated Edwardsburg in a key Wolverine Conference game Friday.
