Emma Nelson is a senior on the Edwardsburg volleyball team.
What has been one of your greatest accomplishments as an athlete?
EM: One of my greatest accomplishments was taking second place at nationals with my club team.
What has been one of your biggest
disappointments as an athlete?
EM: One of my biggest disappointments was losing in the first round of districts last year.
What has been a hardship in your life?
EM: A hardship in my life has been trying to be loud and battle my shyness.
Who is a “hero” in your life and why?
EM: A hero in my life would be my mom because she works so hard at her job, as a mom and as an assistant coach.
When are you the most nervous while you are competing?
EM: I am most nervous while standing on the court, waiting for the first ball to be served.
Describe an embarrassing athletic moment.
EM: An embarrassing moment was when I shanked a ball so badly that a parent on the second floor bleacher caught it.
How do you tend to work out/train when by yourself?
EM: I try to balance my workouts with cardio and weight lifting when I’m by myself.
What other sport would you like to compete in if you were not playing yours?
EM: I think that tennis would be an interesting sport to compete in.
Why are sports an important part of a high school experience?
EM: Being on a team in high school is so important because the bus rides, games and tournaments are some of my favorite memories of high school.
How would you give away $50,000?
EM: I would give $50,000 to homeless shelters, the schools and to food pantries.
If you could be the head coach of a team for a year, what team would you choose?
EM: I would want to be the head coach of the volleyball team because I could play queens (a practice drill).
If I did not play sports, I would…?
EM: Go crazy. Sports keep me in shape, active and social and I would be lost without them.
What is the most challenging thing for you to do in your sport?
EM: The most challenging thing in volleyball is serve receive, even thought it is practiced the most.
If you could change one rule about your sport, what would it be?
EM: If I could change one rule it would be that we could touch the net.
What is the best compliment you have ever received?
EM: The best compliment was when the coach of the other team said that he was impressed with my passing.
What was the scariest thing you have had to do? Are you glad you did it?
EM: One of the scariest things I’ve had to do was coach. I am glad I did it because it taught me that I’m both stronger and weaker than I thought.
What was the last thing you saw someone do that really impressed you?
EM: I was really impressed with how a coach of a team that was losing badly still tried to pump up her team.
What is your favorite hobby? Why?
EM: My favorite hobby is volleyball because I absolutely love it and it makes me happy.
