Life’s milestones come in all varieties, but when celebrating one for one of our publications it often feels like we are proud parents.

A few weeks ago I wrote a column for the eighth issue of Michiana Life, marking the two-year anniversary of our free quarterly lifestyle publication. I wanted to share a revised version of that here.

When we started Michiana Life’s journey almost two years ago I wrote that our focus would be on showcasing the special people who make this region so amazing.

With eight issues on the shelf, I can honestly look back and say we have surpassed all my expectations.

The Summer 2016 issue represents that goal perfectly, spotlighting some tremendously talented individuals who give selflessly to make Michiana a better place to live.

Almost every feature in the magazine offers a window into the lives of some truly amazing people.

You probably have to start with the Gondrezick women from Benton Harbor who have overcome obstacles to excel, both on and off the basketball court. They are perfect examples that anything is possible with hard work, dedication and passion.

Perhaps no one in this issue understands the benefit of giving to others better than Chris Cox. For nearly 20 years he has committed himself to enriching the lives of Dowagiac youth. It isn’t enough to spend most of his time as a teacher; he also gives up much of his summers molding youth at Fitch Camp.

When it comes to community commitment, the four founders of The Local Cup coffee shop in South Bend really get what it means to foster connections that bring people together. It may sound like a simple concept, but this pay-it-forward business is far greater than the sum of its parts.

For anyone who has walked through the doors at Granger Community Church, it is hard to imagine that Pastor Mark Beeson sat in his car just a mile or so away from that site and prayed God would guide him in his mission to build a congregation. Three decades later, GCC reaches thousands of people each week and resonates with many who never thought church was for them.

And the list goes on and on.
