Twin City Players hosting fundraiser, festival

ST. JOSEPH, Mich. — The Twin City Players will host an evening of classical voice and piano performance this month. A Night at the Opera: A Fundraising Concert will support the inaugural Twin Cities Theatre Festival with all proceeds benefiting the event.

Lovers of classical music and opera will enjoy classical opera solos, duets and quartets. The concert will feature numbers from some of the world’s most-loved operas, including “La Boheme,” “Rigoletto,” “Barber of Seville,” “The Pearl Fishers,” “Turandot” and many more.

The fundraising concert is headlined by tenor Paul Mow (New York City Opera, Florida Grand Opera, Glimmerglass) and joined by baritone Jonathan Beyer (Metropolitan Opera, Dallas Opera, Munich Philharmonia) and soprano Sarah Gartshore (Santa Fe Opera, Chamber Opera Chicago). Accompanying them on piano will be Teresa Kang of Chicago, Illinois.

The event will also feature performances by Lorie Kraus (mezzo-soprano), Kacie Mercer (soprano), Madeline Schrock (soprano) and Anthony Tibbitts (tenor).

Tickets will be $35 in advance and $40 at the door. Reservations can be made online at twincityplayers.org or by calling the TCP Box Office at (269) 429-0400. The concert start time is 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 28. The concert will take place at The Heritage Cultural Center and Museum at 601 Main St. in St. Joseph.

With support of A Night at the Opera: A Fundraising Concert and local sponsors, the first annual Twin Cities Theatre Festival will take place Aug. 26, 27 and 28 at The Oak Room at the Citadel in the Benton Harbor Arts District.

Borrowing elements from Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun, Bruce Norris’ Pulitzer Prize-winning play explores race relations and gentrification in the changing face of a Chicago neighborhood.

 

• “Next to Normal” with music by Tom Kitt; book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey

A local revival of this rock musical whose story concerns a mother who struggles with worsening bipolar disorder and the effect that her illness and the attempts to alleviate it have on her family.

 

• “To Kill a Mockingbird,” based on the novel by Harper Lee; dramatized by Christopher Sergel

4 p.m. Aug. 28

In this revival of the local TCP production, Atticus Finch is a lawyer in the fictional town of Maycomb, a racially divided Alabama town, set in the early 1930s. Finch defends a young black man on trial, accused of atrocities towards a white woman. How will the trial turn out—and will it effect changes in racial attitudes in Maycomb?

The Twin Cities Theatre Festival is presented by the Twin City Players and sponsored by the New Territory Arts Association and the Lake Michigan College Performing Arts department.
