Although details behind their dismissal remain sparse, two administrators with Southwestern Michigan College were terminated by the Dowagiac community college Tuesday, according to President David Mathews.

Eileen Crouse, the vice president for student services, and Bethany Ballard, the student activity center manager, were both fired following the completion of an internal review by the college that began last week, Mathews said.

“The review concerned whether or not they were conforming with college policies,” Mathews said. “We
eventually determined it was in the best interest to end the employment of both individuals.”

Mathews did not divulge details pertaining to the review or other circumstances behind the administrators’ dismissal.

According to Mathews, the vice president for student services position is responsible for overseeing several areas of the college’s operation, including academic advising, student housing, the student activity center and the marketing and recruiting departments.

Neither position was involved in academic instruction, Mathews said.

Crouse had been employed at the college since June 2003, while Ballard had worked there since October 2013.

The college has named an interim director of the student activity center to ensure continuity of the facility’s operations over the summer, Mathews said. No interim has been named for the vacancy created by Crouse’s dismissal, though the president said he expects to have both offices filled by the start of the fall semester.
