Three injured in Milton Township crash
MILTON TOWNSHIP — The Cass County Sheriff’s Department is reporting that three people were injured in a single vehicle accident Friday at the M-60/U.S. Highway 12 interchange in Milton Township.
At approximately 8:49 p.m., public safety personnel responded to the scene after receiving word of the crash.
The driver of the vehicle, 33-year-old Danny Sink, of Osceola, Indiana, was traveling with Kimberly Payne of Edwardsburg and her son, Aden. Sink’s vehicle ran off the roadway and overturned. Southwestern Michigan Community Ambulance Service transported all three subjects to Memorial Hospital in South Bend for treatment of minor injuries.
All passengers were wearing their seatbelts at the time. It is not known if alcohol was a factor.
The incident remains under investigation.
Benton Harbor teen drowns at Silver Beach
ST. JOSEPH — A Benton Harbor teenager drowned this weekend after jumping off a pier at Silver Beach County Park in St. Joseph.
Seventeen-year-old Travonne Shannon, a junior at Benton Harbor High School, was pronounced dead at Lakeland Hospital in St. Joseph, according to the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department.
Police said Shannon, who was with a relative, jumped off the south pier into Lake Michigan and did not resurface shortly after 7 p.m. Saturday.
Following a search and rescue effort, the Berrien County’s Sheriff’s Department’s dive team located Shannon in approximately 14 feet of water. He was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Public safety officials are reminding residents that jumping off piers is extremely dangerous and should never be done.
Arrest made in Edwardsburg bank robbery
EDWARDSBURG — Law enforcement officers from seven different agencies worked together to capture a 38-year-old male accused of robbing the Chemical Bank in Edwardsburg Friday afternoon.
According to Ontwa Township-Edwardsburg Police Chief Tim Kozal, the Chemical Bank, located in the 69000 block of M-62 in Edwardsburg, was robbed at approximately 12:30 p.m. Friday.
The suspect was then apprehended at approximately 7 p.m. in South Bend.
The suspect is a South Bend resident and is being lodged in the St. Joseph County Jail. His name is being held pending arraignment.
According to Kozal, his department was assisted by the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, Dowagiac Police Department, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Michigan State Police, South Bend Police Department and the St. Joseph County (Indiana) Metro Homicide Unit.
“The arrest was a byproduct of persistence, intelligence gathering, citizen tips and follow up,” Kozal said is a prepared statement.”
