School bond projects shifting into high gear

With the conclusion of the 2015-16 school year Friday, Cassopolis Public Schools will be moving ahead with projects that were approved through a bond issue that passed last fall.
Some projects are under way, while others were not scheduled to begin until the end of the school year.
Work on the roof and masonry work at Ross Beatty Jr./Sr. High School is nearing completion, according to Cassopolis Superintendent Tracy Hertsel.
Other projects, like the installation of a new track, began last Friday.
“I told them the last practice was Thursday and they could begin on Monday and the track is gone,” Hertsel said. “I couldn’t believe it. “The roofing project at Ross Beatty is about 50 percent complete. The masonry is about the same.”
Work will begin inside of Ross Beatty on Tuesday.
“We will start tearing out on the interior carpeting and wall furnishing in the classrooms and state the process of putting new flooring in,” Hertsel said. “We will start replacing the light fixtures in the rooms.”
A coordination meeting was scheduled for Wednesday. Hertsel said that interior group was going to work over the weekend in order to get ahead of the flooring company.
All bids have been posted and accepted with the exception of technology, which will be one of the last phases of the project.
“We kind of wanted to hold off to make sure everything else was in place before we went there because technology is going to move pretty quickly,” Hertsel said. “Our biggest thing was to take care of the big-ticket items first.”
Starting next week will also be the removal of windows and doors.
“The hope is to pull out a window or a door and replace it so that they do not have to worry about security issues,” Hertsel said. “They are going to do a one-for-one on those.”
The deadline for completion of the bond project was the second week of August.
Hertsel feels that things could be nearing completion sooner than that.
“On the schedule they are headed, I would say that probably by the end of July we should be in decent shape unless something really gets held up material wise,” he said. “I would say, right now, the roofing and the masonry are about a week ahead of schedule.”
Once the roofing and masonry is completed at Ross Beatty, work will begin at Sam Adams Elementary, which is much smaller in scale.
